Political Parties
A Political party is a group of like-minded individuals who join together to achieve a common political aim or support an
individual or family. They are ancient and have thrived wherever organized
government has existed. Have a look at some different types of Political Parties.
Parties in the USA
Sarah Palin and the Tea Party The US's recent political phenomenon is Sarah Palin and the so-called Tea Party. The Tea Party organisation is made up of a loose collection of ultra conservatives who infiltrate the Republican Party with a view to moving it to the right. Their main ideas are they believe in personal self reliance, low or no taxation and are pro-military, pro-nuclear, pro-Israel and pro-life (anti abortion). While happy about military spending they are unable to come up with any ideas on how it should be paid for. The poster girl of the Tea Party is Sarah Palin, the gun toting politically illiterate, climate change skeptic who almost made it to the White House as Republican Vice Presidencial candidate. The Tea Party takes its name from the Boston Tea Party in 1775. The Tea Party's rise is a reflection on middle America's exclusion from the political process. White middle class America have had their Bibles taken from them in schools, have been squeezed out by hoards from across the border and are having their values assaulted by bogeymen in Islamic robes. America is resembling a giant Banana Republic more and more every day, and God help with world if Sarah Palin takes top job. American's don't mind incompetence in the White House and even go so far as to re-elect it.
George W. Bush was described by Jimmy Carter 'as America's worst President.' If Sarah Palin wins, that honour is sure to be bestowed on her. It is said, 'people get the Governments they deserve.' What does George W. Bush and Sarah Palin say about America?
Republican Party Formed to oppose the expansion of slavery in the US, the Republican Party
(the Grand Old Party - GOP) was founded on Feb 28, 1854 in Ripon
Wisconsin. Abraham Lincoln was the party’s first President elected in 1860
and the party has retained most support in the north and central US.
Republicans won control of the House of Representatives thus making Obama's remaining term a 'Lame Duck Presidency'. Republicans represent conservative values, big business, low
taxation, free trade and champions security.
Democratic Party
Thomas Jefferson founded the Democratic-Republican Party in 1793 and
following a split during the Presidency of Andrew Jackson (1829-1837),
Jackson’s faction became the Democratic Party deriving support from the
southern slave states.
Baraka Obama made history by being the first black President and won office promising change. Little has changed and if the Republicans can put up a good challenger its hard to see him being re-elected. The normally unrepresented black, Hispanic and unclass who voted for him last time find it hard to see how he has improved their lot. The Democratic party represents the interests of minorities, champions liberal social
spending and reduced Military involvement.
Third Parties
The US political system makes it very difficult for small parties or
Independents to achieve success. None achieved any degree of long term
success during the 20th Century for example.
The Presidential Election in 2004 saw the Green Party as the main third
party but won barely 1%. Ross Perot’s Reform Party challenged Bill Clinton in a TV campaign
in 1992 but effectively took votes mainly from the Republicans to ensure a
Democratic victory. The Tea Party are not putting up their own candidates this time around but are striving to take over the Republicans from within. Ultra conservatives view Sarah Palin as the champion of their cause.
Banned Parties Historically where political parties have been banned by authoritarian
regimes or governments nervous of the consequences, parties have often
existed in clandestine form to avoid the ban.
The political
organization that triggered the revolution that overthrew
the last Chinese Emperor in 1911-2 was called The Society for Daily
Improvement, and masqueraded as a community group to avoid the ban on
political parties. Perhaps this explains why the current Chinese
Government is so nervous about the meditation group Falun Gong?
Family Parties In many countries single families dominate a political organization and
the party exists to promote the family. In Argentina the Peronist Party
bears the name of Juan Peron and his charismatic wife Evita Peron who run
the country off and on from 1946.
Single Issue Parties Parties often exist to promote one issue only and usually don’t see
themselves as seriously attempting to gain power. America’s Marijuana
Reform Party is in this category.
Silly Parties Around the world there are light hearted individuals or groups who use the
political process as an excuse for merriment. Britain’s Monster Raving
Loony Party is a candidate for world’s most ridiculous party.
'Democratic' Terrorist Parties As the world's sole global superpower, the US feels it has a right to comment and shape the political affairs in practically any country it needs to. Popularly elected 'terrorist' parties pose a real challenge to US foreign policy. While the State Department may classify many foreign political parties as 'terrorist organisations' many enjoy popular support are observe strict democratic systems. In the Middle East the US is possed with a real problem and has come down on the side of 'corrupt' friends of America rather than supporting 'honest' enemies of America. In Lebanon the largest political party which enjoys the support of more voters than any other party is Hezbollah, while in the Palestine Authority Hamas beat Fatah at the ballot box but America and Israel prefer to deal with the corrupt Fatah gangsters rather than the honest Hamas imams.
In the past the US have been enthusiastic supporters of military dictatorships toppling democratic communist regimes such as Chile's in 1973. US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan have all the signs of being costly 'Vietnam's'. In Iraq pro-Iran shi'ite politicans are cementing themselves in, while in Afghanistan a resurgent Taliban are emerging as the only 'honest' political force in a country where American taxpayers are proping up a corrupt collection of former Warlords, Terrorists and Drug smugglers. Despite the billions being spent in that backward country, few are expecting a Swiss style democracy to emerge.
Political Spectrum The two extremes of the Political spectrum are the right wing and the left
wing. The right wing is generally perceived to be conservative and the
left is radical. The terms Right and Left ultimately are derived from the
Bible where in the book of Hebrews (Heb 12:2) it says:
"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the
joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and
is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."
During the French Revolution when the King was forced to call a National
Assembly, the conservative supporters of the ancien regime (the Monarchy
and church) sat at the right hand side of the Throne, in keeping with this
verse. Those opposed to them (radical revolutionaries) sat on the left.
Moderates sat in the middle.
